  7. CDEVs/Extensions:
  8. Memory:
  9. RAM Disk support on Quadra and PowerBook machines.  Support for RAM Disk on
  10. Macintosh Portable has been moved from the Portable CDEV to Memory.  Minor
  11. internal changes have been made to all of the “panels” inside memory.
  12. Specifically, the VM and RAM Cache “panels” have been updated to work correctly
  13. with the new RAM disk and to work with the existing RAM disk on Macintosh
  14. portables. The previous version of the Memory control panel would let users
  15. reduce the size of the VM backing store (by reducing VM). This change would
  16. take effect before re-boot. This has been corrected under 7.0.1 to not occur
  17. until reboot.

  19. Portable:
  20. The screen brightness and contrast sliders previously found in Portable have
  21. been removed.  The PowerBook family has hardware controls on the front of the
  22. machine to control contrast and brightness.  For the Classic family,  Macintosh
  23. Portable, and PowerBook 100, a dedicated CDEV called “Brightness” provides
  24. users of those machines with control of the overall screen brightness.  RAM
  25. disk controls for Macintosh Portable previously found in “Portable” have moved
  26. to “Memory.”

  28. Portable supports internal modems in PowerBook 140 and 170 as well as in
  29. Macintosh Portable.
  30.  
  31. Brightness:
  32. The brightness CDEV supports Macintosh Portable, Classic, Classic II, and
  33. PowerBook 100 computers.  The CDEV is a simple slider that controls overall
  34. screen brightness.
  35.  
  36. Network:
  37. Minimal changes to support on-board Sonic Ethernet for the Quadra family have
  38. been made to Network.
  39.  
  40. Battery:
  41. Battery has been updated to work with the PowerBook family—it also sports a new
  42. look.  Battery now provides users with a button to put the computer to sleep
  43. immediately.
  44.  
  45. Caps Lock:
  46. The Caps lock indicator panel places a visual indicator of the state of the
  47. Caps Lock key on the right end of the menu bar. Only available on PowerBooks.

  49. File Sharing Extension:
  50. An internal 4k file sharing buffer has been increased to 5k in size.  With the
  51. increased performance of the Quadra family built-in Ethernet, a slightly larger
  52. buffer increased the file sharing throughput by 2 times on those computers.

  54. Cache Switch:
  55. A CDEV for the Quadra machines that enables the user to disable or enable the
  56. 68040 caches was added to the system.  The CDEV simply sets a PRAM byte and the
  57. System does all the work at the next boot.

  61. Includes general 68040 compatibility changes.

  67. Minor changes to support new hardware and to change a format-time mode select
  68. were made.

  72. OS:
  73. Keyboard patch wakes up sleeping Putter (Macintosh Classic) keyboards.

  75. Support for the 53C96 SCSI chip found in the Quadras and PowerBooks 140 and
  76. 170.  A boot time linked patch was added to wait for all SCSI drives connected
  77. at that time of the previous boot  to spin up before the boot continues.
  78. Quadra, PowerBook 140 and 170 only.

  80. Minor LocalTalk changes for 68040 compatibility.

  82. Minor changes to Gestalt ‘lram’, ‘ram ‘, and ‘kbd ‘ selectors for RAM

  93. Bit mapped system fonts were marked unpurgeable in System 7.0. These have now
  94. been marked purgeable under 7.0.1.

  97. ToolBox:
  98. SANE (Standard Apple Numerics Environment) performance has been improved via
  99. backpatching.  The new SANE is functional on all machines with a IIci class
  100. universal ROM and a Floating Point Unit.  Occasionally noticeable in
  101. applications that use SANE on machines with a FPU.
  102.  
  103. The Disk Initialization Package will now create an MFS disk when the size of
  104. the volume is exactly 800 blocks (400k), instead of doing so on sizes less than
  105. or equal to 800 blocks.  This is to prevent RAM disks that are smaller than 800
  106. blocks from being formatted as MFS volumes.  It is impossible to create a RAM
  107. disk with exactly 800 blocks.

  109. The Notification Manager has been changed to call IdleUpdate when NMInstall is
  110. called (on portables) to wake the system up when a notification is about to be
  111. posted.
  112.  
  113. Support for enabling powerdown messages on Quadra 900 and RAM disk “has files
  114. on it and will be erased if you shut down” warning code have been added to the
  115. Shutdown Manager.  Also, all open video drivers are closed before the power is
  116. killed at _Shutdown.

  118. Support for Quadra and PowerBook sound hardware and internal sound input source
  119. selection has been added to the Sound Manager.
  120.  
  121. The backlight driver has been upgraded to work with the PowerBook family.

  123. SetHandleSize was fixed for all 32-bit memory managers.

  125. General:
  126. Various strings and dialogs required in the support of the new CPUs have been
  127. added to the system.

  129. Several minor changes that reduce the overall size of the run time system heap
  130. were made to compensate for the memory required by the new CPU support.

  132. The Installer script file has been substantially revised to address the needs
  133. of the new CPUs.
